Pre-Veterinary Medicine Scholarships
The 葫芦影业 Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences has scholarships available for incoming freshmen and upper-class students active in the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Program.

Freeman J. Lewis Scholarship
The awards are given annually to enrolled pre-veterinary medicine students.
Students are awarded based on academic performance, involvement in animal-related activities, and demonstrated interest in the veterinary medical profession.
The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Sciences and Biomedical Department.
The Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship was provided through a generous bequest left by Lucile Tinsley of Rapid City in 1989. The scholarship is named for Tinsley's father, Freeman Lewis, who died in 1919. Tinsley's fondness for animals and her desire to help her home state prompted her to provide this scholarship.
J. Michael Robbie Scholarship
The award is given annually to students enrolled in pre-veterinary medicine, with academic achievement, leadership potential and financial need. Preference shall be given to students in greatest need of financial assistance.
The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Sciences and Biomedical Department.
J. Michael Robbie is a native of Minneapolis. He earned his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University in Mechanical Engineering and went on to earn his graduate degree from the University of South Dakota in Law. In 1967 he moved to Florida when his family purchased the Miami Dolphins football team.
Dr. Harry Halverson Memorial Scholarship
The award is given annually to a sophomore student enrolled in pre-veterinary medicine.
The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary and Biomedical Science Department.
The Dr. Harry Halverson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1973 by Edna Halverson in memory of her husband, Harry. Halverson was born in 1896 in Brookings. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in England and France during World War I. In 1920 he graduated from SDSU and then taught in high schools for a number of years. In the 1930's he decided to begin a career in veterinary medicine and obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1936. Halverson and his wife, Edna, moved to Flandreau, South Dakota, where he was engaged in the veterinary field for almost 40 years. He was well-known in the area and the state for his work and involvement in local and statewide affairs.
Richard and Carol Dierks Scholarship
The award is given annually to a third or fourth-year student enrolled in pre-veterinary medicine, who has a strong possibility of acceptance into the professional DVM program. Financial need will also be a consideration.
The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department.
Bruce and Lynette Durheim Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall participate in the Pre-Veterinary Science Program and demonstrate intent to attend veterinary school.
- The student shall demonstrate interest in large animal veterinary care.
- Preference shall be given to residents of Frederick, South Dakota and surrounding area; if there are no eligible recipients from the area, the recipient shall be a resides of North Dakota or South Dakota.
The recipient of the Bruce and Lynette Durheim Scholarship Endowment shall be selected by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Dr. J.B. Taylor Memorial Scholarship
The recipient of the Dr. J.B. Taylor Scholarship must be a pre-veterinary medicine major in his/her second, third or fourth year, must demonstrate high academic performance and have a strong likelihood to succeed in a professional veterinary medicine program. Preference shall be given to students in need of financial assistance. This award is renewable at the discretion of the scholarship committee if the recipient continues to meet the necessary criteria.
The recipient is chosen by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Science Department.
Dr. Joe P. Morgan Endowed Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall be embarking on, or engaged in an academic path of pre-professional education leading to entry into, or professional education leading to completion of, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program.
- The recipient shall be academic standing eligible for successful entry into or continuation in veterinary school.
- The scholarship shall supplement Jackrabbit Guarantee support.
- As long as the recipient remains eligible, the scholarship shall be renewed.
The recipient of the Dr. Joe P. Morgan Scholarship in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
Dr. Myron C. and Audrey M. Kromminga Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall participate in the Pre-Veterinary Science Program.
- The recipient must be an incoming sophomore, junior or senior.
- The recipient shall be a resident of South Dakota.
- The recipient shall be focused on strong academic achievement. Preference shall be given to students demonstrating interest in agricultural and large animal focused veterinary practice. Preference shall be given to recipients that demonstrate participation in extracurricular activities, especially agriculture related activities such as Little International and 4-H. Preference shall be given to recipients that demonstrate financial need.
The recipient of the Dr. Myron C. and Audrey M. Kromminga Scholarship Endowment shall be selected by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Morristone Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Bob Morrison
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient shall be an undergraduate student in their first four years of college.
- The recipient shall be pursuing acceptance into a Veterinary Medicine School through the SDSU Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Program.
- The recipient shall demonstrate an interest in the swine industry.
- The recipient shall demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
The recipient(s) shall be selected by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. The committee may consult with the Donor in an advisory capacity during the selection process as determined appropriate within regulations of current or future IRS Code and State and Federal Laws. The Donor and related parties will not be involved in final recipient selection. All recipient(s) shall be awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis.
Pipestone Veterinary Services Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- The recipient must pursue pre-veterinary science.
- The recipient must demonstrate leadership qualities.
- Preference shall be given to seniors.
The recipient of the Pipestone Veterinary Services Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Scholarship Committee.
RTI, LLC Scholarship
The recipient shall be a student majoring in pre-veterinary science or pursuing a course of study leading to a career in veterinary medicine.
The recipient of the RTI, LLC Scholarship shall be selected by the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Scholarship Committee.
Tyler Holck, DVM and Gayle Brown, DVM Scholarship
Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:
- A student entering their junior or senior year.
- A student pursuing acceptance into a veterinary school through the pre-veterinary program at 葫芦影业.
The recipient of the Tyler Holck, DVM and Gayle Brown, DVM Scholarship shall be selected by a university scholarship committee.
