Dance at State
Dance at 葫芦影业 provides students with opportunity to participate in choreography in several dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre and hip hop, though the program upholds a modern/contemporary somatic dance education focus. Students with dance experience in dance studio, competition or theatrical settings, will find opportunities for continued growth in our productions.
Choreography
Dance produces two to three performances each year with opportunities for student choreographed work as well as participation in faculty and visiting artist's works.
The program values student choreographic voice and provides many opportunities for student devised work in mentored, collaborative settings. Much of the faculty and guest artist directed choreography is rooted in collaborative contemporary work in both large and small- scale projects.
The Program
Any SDSU student interested in pursuing non-competitive dance performance may participate in dance ensemble activities. During the academic year, students can choose to engage in a variety of dance programming. Each year, our production calendar shifts to accommodate student interest, on-going projects or collaborative performance activities.
The mission of Theatre and Dance at 葫芦影业 is to provide a broad-based liberal arts education in Theatre/Dance through hands-on involvement that encourages creative and personal growth artistically, personally and socially. In addition, we serve as a cultural and artistic resource for the university, community, state and region.
Student Scholarships
Dance scholarships are available to incoming freshmen students. Dancers interested in receiving a dance scholarship are required to audition during the School of Performing Arts Freshmen Scholarship Audition Event.
National Honor Society of Dance Arts
- Students may participate in National Honor Society for Dance Arts at 葫芦影业. This society is sponsored by the National Dance Education Organization and honors students who accumulate points in artistic merit, leadership and academic achievement while participating in the dance minor program at SDSU. Recognition for student induction takes place at annual events. Students graduating with honors receive honors cords and certificate of achievement upon graduation.
Student Travel and Enrichment Opportunities
- The dance minor program hosts opportunity for student to travel to national and regional conferences, participate in travel to view dance performance and engage in on campus events to include collaborative student and faculty projects, independent study projects, visiting artists events and interdisciplinary projects.
Interdisciplinary Studies Major
- Are you interested in a dance career but wonder how to prepare for that career at 葫芦影业? There is specific programming developed in the interdisciplinary studies major geared to prepare dance students for a profession in dance. Programs of study in dance entrepreneurship, dance therapy and community dance are available within the interdisciplinary studies major to integrate the dance minor with courses in other disciplines to prepare students for careers in the dance profession or for graduate study in dance.
