The residence hall is named after N.E. Hansen, former head of the horticulture department. Dr. Hansen was a world-renowned authority on horticulture who toured Europe and Asia as the first plant explorer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His influence and many of the species he collected from around the world can still be found on campus and across North America. He served at SDSU from 1895 until 1937. He helped establish the world's first greenhouse devoted to plant breeding on this campus and he had either a direct or indirect role in the introduction in South Dakota and in this country of Cossack alfalfa, crested wheat-grass, brome grass, Hope flowering crabs and honeydew melons, to name a few. Hansen also wrote the words to the school song, "The Yellow and Blue," continued to involve himself in research, plant breeding, teaching and public service until his death in 1950.
