Biography
Irene Arango Gomez received her B.S. in health sciences from the University of South Dakota, followed by her Masters in Public Health. During her academic career, she gained experience through roles in a rural healthcare facility, a non-profit organization, as a federal employee and as a student researcher working with her local state health department and Native American tribes.
In November of 2022, Irene joined 葫芦影业 College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions as the first community care coordinator for the Department of Allied and Population Health. This role solely works on grant work for the Community Practice Innovation Center. Some of her major responsibilities include grantsmanship, community outreach and partnership, resource allocation and distribution, community events, data collection, facilitation of professional education events and serving as a liaison for cultural communities, including minority and Spanish-speaking populations.
Currently, Irene contributes to the BREATHE-SD and START-SD series and supports the Mobile Clinic Program as needed.
In addition to her work at SDSU, Irene began teaching as an adjunct instructor for the Master of Public Health program, teaching Environmental Health and the Program Planning and Evaluation courses. Her educational background and interest encompass substance use disorders, environmental and social determinants of health, Indigenous populations, social injustices, health, acculturation and social research.
